Microsoft sends takedown notice to AutoPatcher

The AutoPatcher project has been asked by Microsoft to stop operations. "Today we received an e-mail from Microsoft, requesting the immediate take-down of the download page, which of course means that AutoPatcher is probably history. As much as we disagree, we can do very little, and although the download page is merely a collection of mirrors, we took the download page down. We would like to thank you for your support. For the past 4 years, it has been a blast. Unfortunately, it seems like it's the end of AutoPatcher as we know it."

After four years of providing safe, reliable access to publicly available Windows updates, AutoPatcher has been shut down. AutoPatcher provided a safe and easy way for users to download Windows updates without connecting to Microsoft's servers. This came in handy if you wanted to update multiple computers. You could download AutoPatcher, put it on a disc and install it on PCs before connecting them to the internet, thus avoiding any vulnerabilities that may exist in pre-patched systems.

Apparently Microsoft has sent a takedown notice to the developer, saying that Windows Updates should only be downloaded from Microsoft's servers.

The developer says he has no grounds to challenge Microsoft, and so the AutoPatcher project is for all intents and purposes dead.

What do you think about this behaviour of Microsoft. Are they right or wrong for you?

Microsoft, yayınladığı yamaları özel bir yazılım ile bir araya getirerek dağıtan ve büyük kolaylık sağlayan AutoPatcher'a uyarıyı gönderdi. Şimdi neler olacak?

AutoPatcher, yamaları her ay toplayarak özel bir yazılım altında birleştirerek tek kurulumda tüm bu yamaları bilgisayara yükleyen bir yazılım. Sizi saatlerce download işleminden kurtararak birkaç dakikada bilgisayarınızın güncel kalmasını sağlıyordu. Son atakları ile çoklu dil desteği ve Windows Vista seçenekleri de yazılıma eklendi. Microsoft, bugün söz konusu projenin sahiplerine ve bu yazılımı dağıtan download merkezlerine bir e-posta göndererek, tabiri caiz ise ayarı verdi. Yamaların, sadece Microsoft sunucularından indirilmesi gerektiğini ve AutoPatcher'ın suç işlediğini belirten mesajda, en kısa zamanda bu projenin sonlandırılması gerektiği de savunuldu. Bu yazılımın Türkiye'de bilgisayar dergileri tarafından dağıtıldığını anımsayanlarınız olabilir.

Şimdi Neler Olacak?

Aslında bu sorunun cevabı oldukça kısa; hayatta başarılar AutoPatcher. Microsoft, bu konuda yasal olarak tamamen haklı. O nedenle bu yazılımın yaşaması, bu andan itibaren mümkün değil. Kendi web sitelerinde de bu durumu açıkça bildiriyorlar.

Microsoft'un bu tavrı hakkında ne düşünüyorsunuz? Sizce yaptıkları doğru mu?

microsoft is legally right but in my opinion microsoft should support them, but they have chosen the easy way and they have forbidden them. if you forbid them you must do this better then them. if you are not better then them then let them do their work. that was one of the best programs i ever used. i hope microsoft will step back. :thumbdown:

Mesele daha iyisini yapmak değil. Onlar daha iyisini yapabilirler ama demek ki işlerine gelmiyor. Esas amaç bilişim dünyasında tekel olmak, bu arada güncellemeler yoluyla kullanıcıların bilgisayarlarındaki bilgileri toplamak ve zamanı geldiğinde bunları bir şekilde kullanmak kanımca. :angry:

i was using autopatcher and i liked that software much. but microsoft is right. microsoft.com is the only legal site to publish updates for windows. if they want they can ban everyone. but also sad. ::(

Wow. This IS bad news.

Autopatcher was a great help and I can’t understand how am I (and others like me) to manage without it.

WAN traffic (and update time) at work is a bad outcome but the major problem is going to be when dealing with private customers. Without AP you need to get there, run windowsupdate and just wait forever (while the customer looks at you doing nothing and getting very angry since he is paying for the time).

I hope it’s not really over.

BTW, any chance of publishing the e-mail content or is it confidential? What seems to be the problem from MS perspective? It’s not like AP is helping piracy or anything, it even includes WGA. In addition all of the stuff you repackage is (legit)available on the net anyway.
