Resmi olarak ise Ubuntu 7.04; yani "2007'nin 04. ayında çıktı".

Gnome masaüstü etrafında şekillendirilmiş Ubuntu, geniş paket desteğiyle kendi içinden projeler doğmasına da izin veriyor. KDE kullanılan Ubuntu projesine Kubuntu deniyor. Düşük donanıma sahip sistemler düşünülerek hazırlanmış bir proje de Xubuntu; Xfce grafik masaüstü ortamı ile gelen bir Ubuntu. Edubuntu ise eğitim projeleri için düşünülmüş. Bunlar dışında Fluxbuntu (Fluxbox masaüstü) gibi daha küçük yan projeler de bulunuyor.
